GCE Advanced level providers in England

Stuart Gardner
Introduction
This paper provides a brief history of the establishment and development of the three types of state-maintained institution which between them dominate the provision of GCE Advanced level course for 16-19 year olds in England: school sixth forms; sixth form colleges; and tertiary colleges. Inevitably, with respective histories of around 600 years, 40 years and 30 years, there is more to say about schools.
