Engaging Youth Enquiry Working Paper 1
Stephanie Wilde, Geoff Hayward and Alis Oancea
Published February 2008
A stubbornly consistent proportion of young people in England and Wales are not (in official terms) engaged in any work, education or training. It is widely accepted that this is a major social problem which leads to disadvantage for each of the individuals affected (see Pearce and Hillman, 1998; Bynner and Parsons, 2002), as well as wider costs for society (see Coles et al., 2002; Prince’s Trust, 2007).
The purpose of the Rathbone/Nuffield Review Engaging Youth Enquiry is to improve our understanding of the varying and complex needs, aspirations and experiences of those at risk of disengagement from education. The Nuffield Review and Rathbone aim to do this through an on-going constructive dialogue with young people, practitioners, policy makers and researchers.
