In October 2003, the Nuffield Foundation launched a three year independent review of 14-19 education and training. The Foundation has now extended this for a further three years until October 2009. The Nuffield Review is being carried out by a Directorate of Richard Pring and Geoff Hayward from the University of Oxford Department of Education, Ann Hodgson and Ken Spours from the Institute of Education, University of London, Jill Johnson from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), Ewart Keep from SKOPE, based at Cardiff University and Gareth Rees from Cardiff University. The team brings to the Review extensive networks of research and development - the many schools and local education authorities associated with the Institute’s London Region Post-14 Network, the ESRC Research Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE), directed jointly by Oxford and Cardiff, the incomparable links between UCAS and schools and higher education institutions. In addition, the Review has established close links with the extensive research and development of the Learning and Skills Network (LSN)and of the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER).
The Nuffield Review is currently working on the production of a series of Issues Papers, focussing on various topics within 14-19 education, including Diplomas, Apprenticeships, collaboration between education providers, Careers Education and Guidance, and Aims and Values. These papers are available on this website under the "documents" tab. Comments and responses are invited in relation to these papers, and may be sent by email to the project administrator at nuffield.review@education.ox.ac.uk. These will be included on the website where possible.
Previously, the work of the Nuffield Review centred around the production of three Annual Reports. The first year's work provided an overview of the issues, and this was reflected in the Annual Report for 2003-04.
The second Annual Report (2004-05) focuses on three strands of work identified by the Review in its first year: (i) educational aims, values and the organisation of learning; (ii) the dynamics and performance of the 14-19 education and training system; and (iii) its institutional framework and the effects of key policy steering mechanisms on education provision.
The third Annual Report (2005-06) addresses five overarching areas: (i) 14-19 policy and organisational developments in England; (ii) 14-19 institutional developments in Wales; (iii) young people outside education and training; (iv) articulation between 14-19 and higher education; and (v) educational aims and values underpinning changes in the education and training system.
The Annual Reports are available to download from this website, or hard copies can be obtained by emailing info@nuffield14-19review.org.uk.
